Meet us at the Global Shrimp Forum 2026

Most of what determines shrimp quality happens before the shrimp ever reaches the line. How it's handled, how much stress it experiences, and how quickly it's stunned all leave a mark.

Meet Optimar at Global Shrimp Forum 2026 to see how electric stunning and the equipment built around it can improve both welfare and product quality in shrimp processing.

Why this is getting harder to ignore

Retailers and buyers are asking more questions than they used to. How was this shrimp handled before processing? Can the welfare claims be documented, or are they just a line on a label? A stressed animal is a lower-quality product, and a lower-quality product is harder to sell.

Electric stunning, developed for shrimp

Optimar's Electric Shrimp and Crustaceans Stunner is designed specifically for the fast, high-volume reality of shrimp processing. Shrimp are conveyed in a single layer through the stunning unit, where contact with the electrodes gives an immediate, documented, lasting state of unconsciousness once the shrimp is transferred to ice slurry.

The system runs without chemicals, without residual waste to handle, and without manual infeed – a fully electric, self-contained unit built for wet, high-cleaning environments. It's a scientifically proven welfare solution, not just a claim.

Winner of the 2025 Catch Welfare Innovation Award

Shrimp isn't the only crustacean where this matters. Optimar's Stun & Tail system – winner of the 2025 Catch Welfare Innovation Award – combines electric stunning with automated tailing in a single onboard system, tested under real conditions on the UK trawler Golden Ray. The standalone Tailing Machine replaces a manual process that's both physically demanding for crew and hard to standardize for quality.Different animal, same principle: better welfare and efficient production don't have to be a trade-off.

After the shrimp leaves the line

Processing shrimp at volume also means dealing with wastewater – and increasingly strict environmental requirements around it. Optimar's OptiFlow system handles this end of the process, treating wastewater down to key parameters like COD, BOD, and TSS before safe discharge, fully scalable from small operations to large-scale plants.
