Meet Optimar at The Scottish Skipper Expo 2026
The commercial fishing industry is gathering in Aberdeen on the 7th and 8th of May for the Scottish Skipper Expo 2026. Optimar will be there with partner Fisheries Innovation & Sustainability to showcase our latest groundbreaking technology: The integrated Stun & Tail system – proud winner of the Catch Welfare Innovation Award 2025.
The requirements from supermarket chains are becoming increasingly strict. Today, many retailers demand that animals are stunned before slaughter, and failure to comply can lead to lost trading opportunities. Our automated Stun & Tail system provides a fully integrated, humane stunning process before processing, ensuring you can easily meet growing expectations for animal welfare and sustainability.
People have been thinking about this type of machinery for years and working on it in individual silos at great expense, but with no success. Now, for the first time, everyone has been working together to crack this nut, improve welfare practices, reduce costs and make this fishery more efficient. This machine will create business and community resilience in a valuable market that feeds our families, Kara Brydson, executive director at FIS, recently told the Responsible Seafood Advocate.
Solve labour shortages & improve working conditions
We know that finding enough crew for manual processing is a significant challenge. The Optimar Tailing Machine replaces the potentially unethical and strenuous manual process of pulling tails off live animals. By automating this process with cutting-edge camera technology and machine learning, you save on labour costs and create a safer, more efficient workflow onboard. Your crew no longer has to perform this heavy manual task, allowing you to allocate them to more sensible and efficient work.– Usually, there would be lots of crew members working on these animals in a task that is stressful and repetitive. This machine ticks all the boxes. It maintains a high level of quality, creates a better working environment for the crew and allows businesses to meet new requirements for animal welfare, Kara Brydson, executive director at FIS, explained to the Responsible Seafood Advocate.
Proven at sea: The Golden Ray Built to withstand the harsh reality of life at sea, our concept was developed in close collaboration with UK Charity Fisheries Innovation & Sustainability (FIS) and key players in the UK nephrops industry. In March 2026, the machine was rigorously tested under real conditions onboard the UK commercial vessel The Golden Ray, with support from Northern Ireland's Marine Environment & Fisheries Fund.
– We know that during the summer, when catches are high, time is of the essence. Our equipment allows the crew to resume fishing much faster, says Mårten Jørgensen, Sales Manager at Optimar.
