Optimar has developed a concept that automates the traditionally time-consuming process of tailing nephrops at sea. The concept was a central component of the Stun & Tail system that took home the victory at the 2025 Catch Welfare Innovation Award.

How it works:
The concept combines Optimar's extensive industry experience with groundbreaking technology to ensure a precise and gentle process. The very latest camera technology, combined with machine learning, analyzes the animal and accurately divides each crustacean into a tail portion and a head portion.
The technology has shown proven prospects through rigorous testing under real-world conditions. In May 2025, the machine was tested onboard the British commercial vessel Golden Ray, where Optimar worked closely with fishers to integrate the technology and assess its performance.
