We are part of a global chain of endeavor that puts nutritious seafood on the tables of an ever-growing population. It used to be thought that life under water was so plentiful it could never be depleted. The collapse of fish stocks in numerous traditional fishing grounds has proved that to be a false assumption.
And despite years of fishing bans and catch restrictions, we have learned to our cost that some fish stocks take much longer than expected to recover.
Much better, then, to prevent their collapse through sustainable harvesting.
Fish handling with care
And this is where Optimar comes in. We improve the sustainability of seafood production by enabling our customers to process fish and other aquatic species more effectively and safely, while achieving a higher quality, and therefore higher value, output. We say that our objective is to enable fish handling with care. But what does that mean in practice?
It means emphasizing circularity and efficient resource use. Through maintenance, retrofitting, and upgrades, we extend product lifetimes, reduce materials consumption, and limit waste generation.
Throughout 2025, we advanced solutions that help the global seafood industry operate more responsibly and efficiently. Key initiatives included next-generation stunning and bleeding systems that ensure the humane dispatch of various aquatic species; new cleanable equipment designs that improve food safety and reduce resource use; better digital tools that reduce waste and support energy-efficient production.
Emission reductions
For Optimar, 2025 was a year that demanded tough decisions and a focus on restructuring for future success. Nevertheless, we delivered to customers in more than 50 countries worldwide, and generated gross revenues of NOK 550 million, a significant increase on the year before. We also reduced Scope 1 and 2 emissions to 155 tonnes of carbon equivalents (tCO2e), down from 188 tCO2e in 2024, and expanded Scope 3 reporting in accordance with the GHG Protocol, increasing transparency across our value chain.
This year, Optimar has structured its sustainability report in line with the Voluntary Sustainability Reporting Standard for non-listed SMEs (VSME) developed by European Financial Reporting Advisory Group (EFRAG). We have chosen to use the VSME framework to enhance transparency, reduce the risk of greenwashing and facilitate better dialogue with our stakeholders.
The report covers the wider Optimar Group, which includes the parent company, Optimar AS, a private limited liability company incorporated in Norway, as well as subsidiaries in Spain, Romania, and the United States.
No information has been omitted from the report due to its classified or sensitive nature.
Credibility through transparency
Our report will help Optimar meet the growing expectations of customers, banks, and other partners. We believe that sustainability reporting, although time-consuming, is an important element in maintaining our credibility and reputation for sustainable innovation, strategic development, and transparent communication.
